Background
Parents come from low income backgrounds, daily wagers, agricultural backgrounds with farmers having small parcels of land, small business owners, street vendors, plumbers, mechanics, masons etc. Many children are first generation school going children. On most occasions the parents have to be impressed upon the need for education and also for retention of children in shcools.
Resilience and Solutions
Basic facilities:
With remote schools, there are challenges of resources like consistent supply of electricity, transportation, infrastructure, connectivity, access to high speed internet, water, toilets etc. Some solutions like renewable energy, transportation, hostels, short term accommodation, good infrastructure etc have been put in place.
Retention of teachers:
In rural areas there is a paucity of quality teachers. Many teachers who get trained and gain experience tend to go to semi urban or urban places or government jobs to get better wages. Retention and provision of a career path to teachers is achieved through continuous training, a sense of ownership and leadership development..
Success in Kannada Medium Schools:
Medium of teaching in the regional language of the child has been proven to be effective. In Spite of the popularity of English medium for education, the requests for education in the Kannada medium is being fulfilled.
Challenges in Urban areas:
With the changing nature of the workforce and the skills required in urban areas we are seeing a lot of parents who have migrated recently and are from low income groups. Parents have the challenge of language, communication, culture and resources. Teachers have to adopt and learn additional languages along with the culture of the child. Simultaneous and synergetic adaptation by teachers, parents and children has benefited the children.
Continuity in the teaching learning process:
Successful adoption to technology for communication and teaching children has helped in maintaining continuity in the teaching learning process. Parents have been made to understand the needs of children at home to concentrate on studies.
Consistent Delivery:
Consistent good results in 10th std, improvement in infrastructure and quality of education, delivery methods etc has been possible with:
- Guidance from a panel of experts who have vast experience in the field of education.
- Operations managed by the local committees.
- Constant support from the society for funds and as volunteers.
Our children progress in their careers with us being confident that they have their spirits rooted in our land.
